Belief in Divine Decree

Belief in Divine Decree, known as Qadar, is one of the pillars of Iman. It means believing that Allah has complete knowledge, wisdom, power, and control over everything that happens.

Qadar is a deep and comforting belief. It teaches Muslims that life is not random, that Allah knows all things, and that every event occurs within His knowledge and permission.

At the same time, Islam teaches that human beings have responsibility and choice. A Muslim must make effort, choose what is right, and avoid what is wrong while trusting Allah with the outcome.

What Qadar Means

Qadar means divine decree or destiny. It includes belief that Allah knows everything before it happens, that He wrote what will occur, that nothing happens except by His will, and that He created all things.

This belief does not mean life is meaningless or that people are forced without responsibility. Rather, it means that Allah’s knowledge and power are perfect, while human beings are still responsible for their choices.

Allah’s Knowledge and Control

Allah knows the past, present, and future. He knows what happened, what will happen, and what would have happened under different circumstances. Nothing is hidden from Him.

Allah’s control over creation is complete. No event happens outside His knowledge or permission. This includes blessings, tests, ease, hardship, life, death, provision, and opportunity.

This belief helps Muslims trust Allah’s wisdom, especially when life does not go according to their plans.

Balance Between Free Will and Allah’s Control

Islam teaches a balanced understanding. Allah is in control of everything, but human beings still make choices and are accountable for them.

A person chooses whether to pray or neglect prayer, whether to be honest or dishonest, whether to help others or harm them. These choices matter and will be judged by Allah.

At the same time, the results of our efforts are in Allah’s hands. A Muslim plants the seed, but Allah controls the growth. A Muslim works hard, but Allah controls the outcome.

Taking Action While Trusting Allah

Belief in Qadar does not mean being passive. A Muslim should work, plan, seek treatment, pursue knowledge, protect their family, and solve problems.

The Prophet ﷺ taught reliance on Allah along with taking practical steps. True trust is not laziness. True trust means doing what is right while knowing that the final result belongs to Allah.

Why This Belief Brings Patience

Qadar brings patience because it teaches that hardship is not random. A believer knows that Allah is aware of every difficulty and that there is wisdom behind His decree.

When something painful happens, the Muslim may feel sadness, but they do not lose faith. They understand that Allah can bring good from difficulty, forgive sins through hardship, raise ranks, and open doors that were not expected.

This belief helps the heart remain steady.

Why This Belief Brings Peace

Belief in Qadar brings peace because it reduces regret, panic, and anxiety over things beyond human control.

A Muslim learns to say: I will do my best, seek Allah’s help, and accept what Allah decrees.

This does not remove human emotions, but it gives the heart a foundation. The believer knows that Allah is more knowledgeable, more merciful, and wiser than creation.

Avoiding Misunderstanding of Qadar

Some people misunderstand Qadar and use it as an excuse for sins or laziness. This is incorrect. A person cannot commit wrong and then blame destiny while ignoring their own choice.

Qadar should increase humility, effort, repentance, and trust. It should not be used to avoid responsibility.
